Abstract

Since 1996, more than 50 patients diagnosed with acinic cell carcinoma (AcCC) of the breast has been reported worldwide. In the present study, a patient which has a diagnosis of AcCC of the breast at our center is reported. She is a 42 years old woman who presented with a left retro-areolar breast lump. On core needle aspiration biopsy, it was diagnosed as invasive low grade carcinoma. She underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. final pathologic review showed irregular cell bands with solid nests as well as bright acidophilic cytoplasm and vacuolated nuclei. The immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was positive for estrogen receptor (ER), E cadherin and Ki67, however it was negative for progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and S100. Finally, the diagnosis of AcCC approved based on these investigations. AcCC is one of the unusual subtypes of breast cancer which shares morphologic features with tumors in the salivary glands. Although there are early reports of favorable prognosis, later studies showed recurrence and distant metastasis in high grade tumors. As there are limited number of cases available in the literature, the optimal treatment is unknown.
