Abstract

Background Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women. Accurate estimation of patients' survival can help with making appropriate treatment decisions. The variability of BC behavior can be explained by the role of Inflammatory mediators in the surrounding tissue, which can significantly induce tumor progression. Objective We aimed to evaluate the Prognostic significance of Inflammation-based prognostic score (IBPS) prior to surgical resection of breast cancer, and the role of preoperative serum level of two nutritional factors, vitamin D and zinc on predicting the risk of recurrence and metastasis. Methods In this study, 90 females with operable breast cancers, who were referred to our surgical department for resection of BC participated. Before the operation, Serum Zinc and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were measured, and the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) was calculated. Results Our analysis revealed a significant direct association between the GPS score and poor outcome (p-value = 0.022). A higher level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D was shown to act as a significant indicator of good prognosis. (p-value = 0.045). The serum zinc level was directly associated with good prognosis (p-value = 0.048). Conclusions Oxidative stress is associated with poor prognosis and can be accurately predicted by the preoperative amount of Serum Vitamin D and zinc concentrations, and GPS. The prognostic significance of these parameters guide surgeons in predicting overall survival and making the decision for surgical treatment.
