Abstract
With the advance of computer sciences, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods have gained attention and become a developing field of study, capable of solving complex problems. Nowadays, AI applications in medicine help physicians deliver optimum patient care. In this regard, the current study aimed to investigate the applications of Genetic Programming (GP) in cancer. Based on the literature review, 24 eligible articles were selected out of 141 studies, which were discussed. In cancer research, AI methods have been widely applied to provide prognosis prediction and risk assessments. In essence, an accurate allocation of cancer patients into risk classes and the prediction of individuals’ prognoses are the main strategic elements of therapeutic decision-making in cancer patients. Also, GP, similar to other AI methods, has been applied for the prognosis prediction and classification of cancer patients. Moreover, the AI-aided classification of cancer types may offer more accurate criteria for differentiation between malignant and benign lesions.
